Read the following sentences:

🔹There is some water in the bottle.

🔹He fell off the ladder.

🔸In sentence 1, the word in shows the relation between two things – water and bottle.

🔸In sentence 2, the word of shows the relation between the adjective fond and the noun daughter.

🔸In sentence 3, the word off shows the relation between the verb fell and the noun ladder.

These words which are used before a noun or a pronoun to show its relationship with another word in the sentence are called prepositions. The noun or pronoun which follows a preposition is called its object. Note that pronouns used after a preposition should be in the objective case.

A preposition may have two or more objects.

🔹Between you and me there are few secrets. (Here the pronouns you and me are the objects of the preposition between.)

Kinds of prepositions

There are different kinds of prepositions.

🍁 Simple prepositions

These are words like at, in, for, to, with, on, off, out, etc.

🍁 Compound prepositions

Prepositions may be small words, but they are very important ones and their correct use shows your mastery of the language. Here are some hints about the correct use of some prepositions.

🍁Beside and besides

Beside means ‘by the side of’. Besides means ‘in addition to’.

🔹They have a house beside the sea. (by the side of the sea)

🔹He stood beside me. (by my side)

🔹He plays the violin besides the piano and the guitar. (He plays three instruments.)

🔹Besides being a good actor, he is also a good singer. (= In addition to being a good actor, he is also a good singer.)

🍁Since and for

Since should be used with a point of time in the past. It is used with a present perfect tense. For is used only when you refer to a period of time.

🔹He has been absent since Tuesday. (NOT He has been absent for Tuesday.)

🔹I have been ill since last week.

🔹He has been absent for three days. (NOT He has been absent since three days.)

🔹I have been ill for two weeks.

🍁Between and among

Between is used to refer to two or three separate people or things. Among is used when the reference is to a group of people or things which we do not see separately.

🔹This is a custom which exists among the Hindus.

🔹He has a house between the river and the woods.

🍁By and with

By is used to refer to the doer of the action. With is used to refer to the instrument with which the action is performed.

🍁In and At

In is usually used with large places – countries, districts, large cities etc. At is generally used for small and unimportant places like villages, small towns etc.

🔹We shall meet him at the club this evening.

🔹His brother lives in Paris.

Notes: This rule is not very rigidly followed. In is sometimes used with small places. At, however, is seldom used for big places.

🍁On, in, at and by

At shows an exact point of time; on shows a more general point of time and in shows a period of time.

🔹I have a meeting at 4 pm.

🔹The train leaves at 2 o’clock.

🔹I was born on a Monday.

🔹I was born on April 21st.

🔹I was born in January.

🔹We will visit them in the summer.

🔹It is very hot in the day but quite cold at night.

By shows the latest time at which an action will be finished. So it is usually used with a future tense.

🔹I will be leaving by 6 o’clock.

🔹I hope to finish the work by next week.

On is generally used to talk about things at rest. Upon is used about things in motion.

With reference to time, in means at the end of a certain period; within means before the end of a certain period.

🌺ஒரு ஊரில் ஒரு செல்வந்தன் இருந்தான். அவன் வியாபார நிமித்தமாக வெளியூர் சென்று திரும்பியபோது, அவனது அழகான பெரிய பண்ணை வீடு தீப்பற்றி எரிந்து கொண்டிருந்தது. 

🌺 அந்த ஊரிலேயே மிகவும் அழகான வீடு

      அவனுடையது தான்..

🌺 அந்த வீட்டை இரண்டு மடங்கு விலை

     கொடுத்து வாங்க பலரும் தயாராக

     இருந்தனர். ஆனால் இவன் தான்

     விற்கவில்லை.  

🌺 இப்போது, அந்த வீடு அவன் கண் முன்னே

     எரிந்துகொண்டிருந்தது. 

🌺ஆயிரம் நபர்கள் சுற்றி நின்று வேடிக்கை

     பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார்கள்.  தீ

     முழுவதுமாக பரவிவிட்டதால் அதை

     அணைத்தும் பிரயோஜனம் இல்லை என்று

     எந்த முயற்சியும் எடுக்கவில்லை. .

🌺வணிகனோ செய்வதறியாமல் கண்ணில்

     நீரோடு புலம்பிகொண்டிருந்தான். 

🌺"ஐயோ என் வீடு..! என் வீடு.."! என்று

     அலறினான்.

🌺அப்போது அவனின் மூத்த மகன் ஓடிவந்து,

     “தந்தையே ஏன் அழுகிறீர்கள்..? இந்த                 

      வீட்டை நான் நேற்றே மூன்று மடங்கு        

      லாபத்திற்கு விற்றுவிட்டேன்.. இதனால் 

      நமக்கு நஷ்டம் இல்லை என்று கூறினான். 

🌺 இதைக் கேட்ட வணிகனுக்கு ஏக மகிழ்ச்சி. 

🌺 அவனது சோகமனைத்தும் மறைந்து

     மகிழ்ச்சி உண்டானது. 

🌺 இப்போது வணிகனும் கூடியிருந்த அந்த

     கூட்டத்தில் ஒருவனாக நின்று வேடிக்கை

     பார்க்க தொடங்கினான். 

🌺 'அதே வீடு தான்..'

🌺 'அதே நெருப்பு தான்..'

🌺ஆனால் சில வினாடிகளுக்கு முன்

    இருந்த தவிப்பும் சோகமும் இப்போது

    அவனிடம் இல்லை.

🌺 சிறிது நேரத்தில் வணிகனின்

    இரண்டாவது மகன் ஓடி வந்து “தந்தையே

    ஏன் இப்படி கவலையில்லாமல்

    சிரிக்கிறீர்கள்..?  நாங்கள் விற்ற இந்த

    வீட்டிற்கு முன்பணம் மட்டுமே

    வாங்கியுள்ளோம். முழுத் தொகை இன்னும்     

    கைக்கு வரவில்லை. 

🌺 வீட்டை வாங்கியவன் இப்போது மீதி

    பணத்தை தருவானா என்பது சந்தேகமே..?

    என்று கூறினான்.

🌺 இதைக் கேட்ட வணிகன் அதிர்ச்சி

    அடைந்தான். மீண்டும் சோகத்தில்

    ஆழ்ந்தான். கண்ணீரோடு மீண்டும் புலம்ப

    ஆரம்பித்தான். 

🌺 'தனது உடமை எரிகிறதே' என்ற எண்ணம்

       மீண்டும் அவனை வாட்டியது.

🌺 சில மணித்துளிகளுக்குப் பின்பு 

      வணிகனின் மூன்றாவது மகன் ஓடி     

      வருகிறான். “தந்தையே கவலை 

      வேண்டாம். இந்த வீட்டை வாங்கிய 

       மனிதன் மிகவும் நல்லவன் போலும். 

🌺 இந்த வீட்டை வாங்க அவன் முடிவு

    செய்தபோது, வீடு தீ பிடிக்கும் என்று

    உங்களுக்கும் தெரியாது எனக்கும்

    தெரியாது. 

🌺 ஆகையால் நான் பேசியபடி முழு

     தொகையை கொடுப்பது தான் நியாயம்

     என்று என்னிடம் இப்போது தான் சொல்லி

     அனுப்பினான்..” என்று மகிழ்ச்சியோடு

     தெரிவித்தான். 

🌺 இதைக் கேட்ட வணிகனுக்கோ ஏக

     சந்தோஷம். 

🌺 கடவுளுக்கு நன்றி சொல்லி ஆடிப்பாடி

    மகிழ்ந்தான். கண்ணீரும், சோகமும்

    மீண்டும் காணாமல் போய்விட்டது. 

🌺 மீண்டும் கூட்டத்தில் ஒருவனாக நின்று

    வேடிக்கை பார்க்க தொடங்கினான்.

படித்ததில் பிடித்தது

 அது ஒரு பெரிய மைதானம். அங்கே மூன்று பையன்கள் விளையாடிக்கொண்டிருந்தார்கள்.

அந்த வழியாகச் சென்ற ஒரு சாமியார் அவர்களைக் கவனித்தார். குழந்தைகள் உற்சாகமாகச் சிரித்து விளையாடுவதைச் சிறிது நேரம் ரசித்தார். அதன்பிறகு அவர் மெல்லமாகக் கைதட்டி அவர்களை அழைத்தார்.

பையன்கள் சாமியாரை மேலும் கீழும் பார்த்தார்கள். அவருடைய விநோதமான உடை அலங்காரமும் ஜடாமுடியும் அவர்களுக்குச் சிரிப்பு மூட்டியது.

சாமியார் அவர்களைக் கேட்டார். ‘கண்ணுங்களா, நீங்க எப்பவும் இந்த மைதானத்திலதான் விளையாடுவீங்களா?’

‘ஆமா சாமி!’

‘எதுக்காக தினமும் விளையாடறீங்க? அதனால உங்களுக்கு என்ன பலன்?’

முதல் பையன் சொன்னான். ‘நல்லா விளையாடினா உடம்பு பலமாகும். அதுக்கப்புறம் நாம யாரையும் பார்த்துப் பயப்படவேண்டியதில்லை. எதிர்த்து வர்றவங்களையெல்லாம் ஊதித் தள்ளிடலாம்!’

இந்த பதிலைக் கேட்டுச் சாமியாருக்கு மிகவும் மகிழ்ச்சி. ‘நீ பெரிய பயில்வானா வருவே’ என்று அவனை ஆசிர்வதித்தார். அதன்பிறகு இரண்டாவது பையனின் பக்கம் திரும்பினார். ‘நீ ஏன்ப்பா தினமும் விளையாடறே?’
